Kesko continues on ´The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World´ list

Kesko ranked 33rd on the ´The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World´ list, announced at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland on 27 January 2010. In the 2010 Sustainability Yearbook, Kesko´s responsibility work qualified in the SAM Silver Class in the Food & Drug Retailers sector. No companies qualified in the Gold Class. In the yearbook, Kesko was also recognised as the "Sector Mover", a qualification given to the company that has achieved the biggest proportional improvement in its sustainability performance.

Kesko has been ranked among the global 100 most sustainable corporations since the list was first launched in 2005.
In 2010, ten social and environmental indicators were used to evaluate companies. The environmental indicators were used to assess issues relating to companies´ energy, carbon and water consumption and waste ratio.

"We really appreciate the international recognition given once again to Kesko´s work for responsibility. We have been working for the environment on a long-term basis. Carbon dioxide emissions of the electricity purchased by Kesko to the K-Group dropped by 80% in 2008. The average waste recovery rate in Finnish distribution centres is 88%. We have signed the trading sector energy efficiency agreement and made a commitment to save over 65 GWh by the end of 2016. This target equals the annual energy consumption of some 15 stores the size of a K-citymarket," says Paavo Moilanen, Kesko´s Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications and Responsibility.

The Sustainability Yearbook 2010 was published by SAM, which has for eleven consecutive years carried out the annual assessment of sustainability practices of the companies included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes. This year SAM assessed 1,237 companies, only top 15% of which in each sector qualified for inclusion in the Sustainability Yearbook 2010.
